Charles C. Russell, Sr. 94, of Alexandria, Kentucky, formerly of Athens, Ohio, passed away at his home on April 26, 2017. He was born on May 15, 1922 to the late George and Janet Withers Russell. On April 10, 1943 he married Melva Fields. After 72 years of marriage, she preceded him in death in 2015.
Charles is survived by his loving sons, Charles (Paulette) Russell, Jr., Pastor of the New Hope Christian Center, Newport, Kentucky, and Tim (Amy) Russell, Pastor of the First Church of Christ, Greendale, Indiana; Grandchildren: Aric (Becky) Russell, Shelly (Mark) Hegyi, Michael Russell, Kyle (Theresa) Russell and Megan (Brandon) Hatfield; also 12 great grandchildren: Alicia, Hope, Jesse, Cole, Brooke, Dane, Hunter, Isabelle, Leah, Ethan, Jacob and Addelyn; also several nieces and nephews.
Along with his wife and parents, Charles was preceded in death by his brothers Frank Ransdell Russell, George Trunic Russell; and sisters Isabelle Riggle and Edna Goff Clark.
Charles was a WW II Veteran, a Corporal in the United States Air Force. Charles worked for Royal McBee Industries for 28 years, and retired from Ohio University, after 17 years where he worked in the graphic arts department. Charles also served for 15 years as a lay Minister, and was instrumental in building several Churches. He enjoyed playing golf. He was a member of the Greendale First Church of Christ, where he had served as an Elder. Charles will be sadly missed by those who knew and loved him.
Donations may be made to either the Greendale First Church of Christ or New Hope Christian Center.
A visitation will be held at Floral Hills Funeral Home on Monday, May 1, 2017 from 11:30 am until the time of service at 1:00 pm. Charles' grandson, Aric Russell, will be the officiant.
