Charollet “Char” Louise Gregory Schworer, a beloved educator, volunteer, and cherished member of the community, passed away with her family by her side peacefully after a long-fought battle with breast cancer on Friday, August 23, 2024, at St. Elizabeth Grant Hospital at the age of 81. Born on July 18, 1943, in Cincinnati, OH, Charollet spent her formative years in Clearfield, KY, where she became fondly known as a “Breck Brat” during her time at Breckinridge Training School.
Charollet's commitment to education began early and was unwavering throughout her life. After completing her K-12 education at Breckinridge, she pursued her passion for teaching at Morehead State College, earning her bachelor’s degree in education in only 3 years. She furthered her studies with a master’s degree from Xavier University. Charollet dedicated over 34 years to teaching for the Covington Board of Education, primarily Third Grade at 9th District School in Latonia, Kentucky. She was an artist and hand painted her bulletin boards with fun, colorful characters for the children to enjoy. She substitute taught for several years, after retirement. Her dedication to her students and her love for teaching were hallmarks of her career.
In the classroom, Charollet’s warmth and enthusiasm were evident, and she continued to share her love of children even after retiring. She volunteered at the Cincinnati Children's Museum for twenty years, where she led “Story Tree Time with Miss Charollet,” bringing joy and education to countless young minds. Her volunteer spirit also extended to the Newport Aquarium and as an usher at St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Cincinnati, OH, where she served with grace and devotion. Also, Charollet served as an usher at the Aronoff Center and Music Hall. Her highlight of ushering was when her niece was the lead actress in the production of The Producers. Charollet was so proud and ushered the production 12 times and said it was her favorite show.
Charollet's life was deeply intertwined with her husband, Jim Schworer, whom she met while both were in education. Their 21-year marriage was marked by mutual respect and affection until Jim's untimely passing in 1988 at the age of 44. Together, they built a home in Taylor Mill, affectionately known as “Schworer Mountain,” which she lovingly called her own for nearly 50 years. Their pride and joy was their 1964 Silver Cloud III Rolls Royce, “Lady J,” a car as exquisite as their love and featured in numerous movies and charity events.
Outside her professional and volunteer commitments, Charollet had a zest for life. She relished driving her 2001 Toyota Celica GT, often with music blaring, and enjoyed traveling out west to explore state parks and Indian reservations. She was proud to tell everyone that she actually hiked the Grand Canyon, all the way down and back up! Charollet loved to dance and was a member of the Cincinnati Bop Club.
A fan of "The Andy Griffith Show," she cherished the opportunity to visit the show's filming locations. At home, Charollet found peace in watching her hummingbird garden and relaxing in her hammock by the pool with a good book. She also enjoyed "vegging out" on the couch with her favorite companions, her "babies", Kitty Cleo and Mr. Spades. They were her therapy cats.
Charollet was a person of exceptional kindness, and her legacy of love and service will be remembered fondly by all who knew her. She was labeled a “Southern Belle”, who was elegant, sweet spirited and had a great sense of humor. Charollet was a role model to all she came into contact with and always took whatever was thrown at her in stride.
Preceding Charollet in death was her loving husband of 21 years, Jim Schworer and her long-time companion of 21 years, Jerry Edwards.
Those left surviving to carry on Charollet’s memory include her children, Jamie Denise (Rich Jones) Schworer and James Gregory Schworer; grandchildren, Katelyn Jean Willis and Ryan Jean Schworer; as well as many cousins, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
