Dorothy Rice

Dorothy Elizabeth Rice, 102, of Latonia, Kentucky, passed away on June 27, 2018 at Rosedale Manor. She was born on November 17, 1915 to the late Hugh Keys Word and Mertie Word Smith. On December 21, 1946, she married Arnold Rice and he preceded her in death in 1984. Dorothy served in the US Navy during WWll as a Navy WAVE clerk and later retired from JCPenney in Newport after 20 years of service as a Credit and Catalogue Manager. Dorothy was a 50 year member of the former Trinity Baptist Church in Newport, Kentucky as well as a member of the Lawlor-Hanlin VFW in Newport, Kentucky. She was involved in the PTA at Mildred Dean Elementary as the former president.
Dorothy is survived by her loving son Michael; loving "daughter" Donna Hackett; brother Dempsey Smith of California; sister Harriet Smith of California; nieces Jan Yates of Houston, Texas and Joyce White of Georgetown, Texas.
Along with her parents and husband, Dorothy is preceded in death by her step mom Alice Oatman Word; brothers Homer Word, Delton Word and George Smith; her twin sister Doris Chafee as well as sisters Ethel Ince, Ola Smith and Phyllis Smith.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, July 7, 2018 from 11 am until time of service at 1pm. Burial will follow with military honors in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens. To leave online condolences, please visit www.floralhillsmemorialgardens.com
