George L. Huffman passed away at the young age of 83 surrounded by his family on September 5, 2023, at St. Elizabeth Hospice. George fought hard against congestive heart and kidney failure. Even though we knew he was not feeling great, he always responded to the doctors that he was “FANtastic”.
George was born May 25, 1940 in Covington, KY. He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert & Maria Huffman, as well as his siblings Paul, Bob, Marietta, Jane and JoAnn. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Barbara L. Huffman, daughters Karen Lenihan (Dan) of Edgewood, Susie Early (Brian) of Richmond and son Dan (Michelle) Huffman of Lakeside Park, seven grandchildren and ten great- grandchildren.
George graduated Salutatorian from Covington Catholic High School. He studied Chemical Engineering at the University of Dayton. George transferred to Vanderbilt University for his senior year when the engineering faculty went on strike at UD. One of George’s most cherished possessions was his Vandy college ring that his kids gave him many years later.
Right after graduation, George married the love of his life Barbara and they moved to New Jersey to start their life together. George worked for Esso Oil and he and Barbara were blessed with two daughters. It is in New Jersey where their love for the theater grew. They loved to attend Broadway shows in their free time. They moved back home to Kentucky after a nine-month transfer to Germany and bought their Edgewood home where they lived for the next 55 years. Their son Dan was born right after they moved back to the area. George worked for the US Environmental Protection Agency in Cincinnati, Ohio for the next 40 years.
George loved to live life to the fullest. He loved to play and coach sports. He was an avid tennis player and ran several leagues simultaneously. He kept thorough stats for every player. Note-taking and detailed lists were his passions up until the end. He was kind and generous to everyone he met. He had a knack for making everyone feel special. He definitely had the gift of gab. He could talk for hours and hours. He loved theater, traveling and dining. Throughout the years George and Barbara supported the local arts, traveled on 20 plus cruises, and became best friends with waiters and waitresses throughout the Tri-State area.
At the end, even his medical records had the notation “nicest man you’ll ever meet”. Please consider making a donation in his memory to St. Elizabeth Hospice, 483 South Loop Road, Edgewood KY.
