WWII Veteran Horace “Baldy” Snyder, 101, of Ludlow, passed away Tuesday, October 17, 2023, at Rosedale Green peacefully in his sleep. He was born November 5, 1921, in Covington, the son of the late Horace Snyder and Gertrude Horstman Snyder. After Horace graduated in 1941 from Holmes High School, he enlisted in the Navy. He was assigned to the USS San Diego CL-53 in May 1942, where he served for two years. After being transferred back to the states, he volunteered for the Marine Medical corp.
In 1945, he was a Navy corpsman serving on the front lines of Sugar Loaf Hill on Okinawa, Japan. It was here that, as a member of the Sixth Marine Division, he received the Silver Star for “extraordinary heroism in action against enemy Japanese forces during the assault and capture of Okinawa, April 1 to June 21, 1945.”
Horace was married to Oneida Ashcraft July 31, 1948. They moved to Ludlow where they raised their four children in their home on Montclair Street where he lived until age 99. Horace retired in 1986 and spent his time playing golf. He played well into his 90’s.
He is survived by his children Sandra Lee Bush (Eddie), Gary Alan Snyder (Sherri), Ronald Glen Snyder, and Linda Sue Snyder; 4 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild. He was predeceased by his wife, 2 brothers and 4 sisters.
Funeral services will be held 11 AM Monday, October 23, 2023, at Floral Hills Funeral Home, where visitation will be held Monday from 9-11 AM. Burial will follow at Floral Hills Memorial Gardens.
The Ludlow Vets will host a reception for family and friends 1 PM Monday, October 23, 2023.
The family would like to thank the staff at Emerald Trace, Rosedale Green and St. Elizabeth Hospice for the wonderful care they gave to Horace.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Cincinnati Association of the Blind and Visually Impaired or the Ludlow Vets.
