John F Karl, Jr., 81, of Ryland Heights, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family Wednesday, July 17, 2024, at St. Elizabeth Hospice, Edgewood.
John was born February 26, 1943, in Covington, the son of the late John Fred Karl, Sr., and Amelia Wagner Karl. He was preceded in death by the love of his life, Joyce. He met Joyce Rensing at Moonlight Gardens at Coney Island on a blind date. They were married in August 1970 and were inseparable until Joyce’s passing in October 2017.
John retired after 45 years practicing law in the Northern Kentucky area. During that time he served on the Covington School Board and performed countless marriage ceremonies as a Justice of the Peace. He also enjoyed real estate investing. He grew up in Peaselburg and graduated from Holmes High School. He earned degrees in Electrical Engineering and Law from the University of Cincinnati. His favorite pastimes included estate auctions, flea markets, gun collecting, car shows and most recently and quite surprisingly, watching WWE wrestling.
John was a man of even temper and possessed a razor sharp, dry wit. He always had a stoic manner on the outside and those close to him could attest to his kind, loving heart. John had a natural curiosity which made him a true lifetime learner. John knew a lot about many, many things and seemed to know a little about almost everything.
He was a connoisseur of all things sweet. Dark chocolate covered cherries and cherry pie were among his favorites. In truth, John approached his sweet tooth like he did his everyday life – he happily embraced each experience eagerly with genuine appreciation.
John always saw the good in people. Through the years, on occasions when others took advantage of his natural kindness, he never let it change him. He continued to show unflappable, genuine care and compassion for others throughout his long life.
Nothing was dearer to his heart than his family. He lived for his children and in the later years took immense joy in spending time with his grandchildren. He took great delight in shopping for their favorite treats and delivering them, savoring their joy and excitement.
John will be sorely missed by Daughters Jennifer Karl [partner Eric Estep] and Kristie Allen [husband Jim and daughter Penelope]; Sons John Karl III [son Chase and daughter Spencer] and Brian Karl [partner Desiree Armstrong, sons Austin and Calvin and daughters Ava and Emma]; as well as a host of friends.
