Mary Catherine Setter, 66, passed away Saturday, March 16, 2024 at the Alois Alzheimer Center, surrounded by family. Mary was born April 19, 1957, in Covington, KY, to the late John Setter and Lorraine Shackelford Setter. Mary was the eldest of six children, known up and down Wayskin Drive for her bubbly spirit and pranks she played with her siblings. Mary spent many summers at the Taylor Mill Swim Club, getting into hijinx with lifelong friend Dawn, and visiting The Dairy Cottage down the street from her house. She graduated from Simon Kenton High School in 1975, where she was crowned Homecoming Queen and voted Ms. Simon Kenton, a testament to her kindness and outgoing personality. Mary went on to graduate with an Associates Degree from Waterson College, where she studied to be a dental hygienist. She worked as a preschool music teacher, interior decorator, and other jobs that allowed her to spend time with her children. She was most proud to be a mother to her three children, and Grandma Mary to her four grandchildren.
Mary loved collecting Coca-Cola memorabilia, sunflowers, spending time crafting, and cheering on her UK Wildcats. She was always the first out on the dance floor and last to leave. She also enjoyed spending time outdoors, including boating, gardening, and taking neighborhood walks. A lifelong Catholic, her faith was very important to her, and sustained her through life's joys and challenges. Left to cherish her memory are her children Benjamin “Ben” Powell (Kim), Susan Herndon-Powell (Kathryn), MaryLauren Knadler (Adam); her grandchildren Kathryn, Paige, Nash and Evan; her siblings John Setter (Tina), Tim Setter (Wanda), Rose Powell (Roddy), David Setter (Jeannette), and Angie Setter (Joey); and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends from Texas, Georgia, Indiana, Ohio and her native Kentucky.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11AM Wednesday, March 20, 2024, at St. Patrick Catholic Church, where visitation will be held immediately prior from 9-11 AM. Burial will follow at Floral Hills Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Alzheimer's Association as they continue their important work in providing Alzheimer's care, support, and accelerating research.
