Jackie Allen Swartz, 84, of Independence, died May 21 at St. Elizabeth Hospice in Edgewood after a short illness.
Mr. Swartz was a barber in Covington for 60 years, working first with his father, Rankins, and later by himself in the Swartz Barber Shop. The business was in two locations on Washington Street and more recently on Pike Street. He retired March 31, 2014.
The son of the late Oscar Rankins Swartz and Mabel Chapman Swartz, he was born in Covington and grew up there. He was a graduate of the Holmes High School class of 1949. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Janis Bradley Swartz; a daughter, Jennifer Mitchell of New Albany, Miss., and her husband Wayne; and a grandson, Joseph Woestendiek, also of New Albany, Miss.
Mr. Swartz enjoyed his years in the barber shop, swapping stories and jokes with long-time customers. He loved spending time with his family, working in his wooded yard, and watching the Cincinnati Reds and the University of Cincinnati Bearcats basketball team.
At his request, there will be no memorial service. Interment will be at Floral Hills Memorial Gardens in Taylor Mill. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Boys Town, 14100 Crawford Street, Boys Town, NE 68010. You may leave online condolences at www.floralhillsmemorialgardens.com
