Woodrow Carpenter, 101, of Cold Spring, Kentucky passed away at home on August 1, 2017. He was born on September 11, 1915 to the late Ernest and Margaretta Carpenter. He married Irmgard Toberg, who preceded him in death on March 28, 2012.
Woodrow was a WW II veteran who served as Lt. Colonel. His memberships include Highland Country Club and the International Brotherhood of Magicians. He was the founder of the Ohio Valley Enamel Guild, the Enamelist Society and the WW Carpenter Enamel Foundation and museum. Woodrow was very active in the University of Illinois Alumni Association and an active member of the American Ceramic Society. He was published in Who's Who on several occasions and was nominated for the Post Corbett Award for company contributions to support the arts. Woodrow's proudest achievement was to be the first person to take the lead out of art enamel. He then developed a product line without lead to be used by artists. He was instrumental in keeping the art of enameling alive. In his earlier days, Woodrow manufactured Amaco's line of enamel in Frankfort, Indiana.
Woodrow is survived by his loving daughter Gay Caldwell, his step daughter Anita Maehren; grandchildren Guido Maehren, Mark Maehren, Michelle Sandmann, Amy Chieffo, Andrea Essert, Allison Ford and Steven Caldwell; and 11 great grandchildren.
In addition to his parents and wife, Woodrow was preceded in death by his first wife Fay Turner Carpenter and brother Kenneth Carpenter.
In lieu of flowers the family has requested memorial contributions be made to the WW Carpenter Enamel Foundation. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home or donations can be made online at www.wwcef.com
